2013 World Champs report

The GB Freestyle Kayak team have just returned from America where they took part in the 2013 ICF World Championships. This biannual event is the pinnacle event of the sport and brings together all the best athletes to compete for the World Championship Gold Medal. This years event saw over 180 athletes, from 30 countries, come to the Nantahala Gorge in North Carolina, USA, to compete for the World Champion title.

It was a great event for British Womens Freestyle with Claire O’Hara dominating the ladies classes winning two gold medals. Doubling the double Claire not only defended her squirt boating world title for the third time but also defended her freestyle kayak world title to bring her ICF World Gold medal count to 5. In the junior womens class young up and coming talent Kim Aldred put down some awesome performance to win her first world championship medal, bringing home the Bronze. Also making it through to the finals with some great performances taking the 5th place spots with some fantastic rides were Ben Aldred in the mens squirt boat class Alan Ward in the K1 mens and Jen McGaley in the Junior Womens.
Alan was only our second mens finalist in 8 years and was apparently the only mens finalist in full time employment, being up against a very strong field of full time kayakers.
