Freestyle AGM

Posted By Fiona Jarvie on Sunday 24th October 2022 at 17:48:06

Thanks to all those who attended the Freestyle committee annual consultative meeting (a.k.a AGM) on Saturday evening.

The following people were voted onto the committee for another year: Bev Chrimes, treasurer; Viv Glaves, co-opted member (to help with child protection); Steve West, co-opted member (to help with competitions/judging); Claire O'Hara, Safety officer

We welcome the following onto the committee for the first time: Jon Best, co-opted member; Aaron Dempsey, co-opted member (to help with competitions), Phil Benn: publicity officer.

Unfortunately there were no nominations for secretary, so the position remains open.

A huge thanks (sorry, I didn't get to do this at the meeting) to Tim Ward for his hard work as chairman this year. He has done a fantastic job to successfully increase the number of domestic events this year as well as leading both the committee and the competitions committee.

I will post the full minutes shortly,

Medal success!

Posted By Tim Ward on Sunday 20th June 2010 at 20:57:46

First up was the squirt event, which, despite a shallow, small and fast moving eddy, was dominated by team GB with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for James Reeves, Jamie Austen and Joshua Gosling. The squirt boaters used the feature to get their mystery moves and James Reeves had perfected the technique getting a good couple of seconds of head under downtime, which along with his smooth over-vertical moves in the eddy gave him the unofficial European Championship title.

Team GB had a potential 7 medals to fight for in the rest of the finals and James Benns and Brendon Orton were in the junior men category. James took a couple of rides to find his form and get his first move - a big air loop landed. He then relaxed into the rest of his rid and a nice McNasty helped him into sliver medal position. Brendon paddled well and although he didn't have quite the rides that he had got in the prelims he also landed some nice air loops and space godzillas earning him the bronze medal.

Stu Parry got some more big air loops in the C1 event. He went for a McNasty but it was just slightly off angle on landing and therefore didn't give him the score he needed to make a medal position. He did well to come 4th though in his first international final.

In the ladies event Claire O'Hara and I were hoping for medal positions. I had a solid first ride with air loop and a helix which gave me a good score. However, Marlene from France had an awesome ride with an entry move end linked into a huge air loop, along with carthweels and another loop she took the lead a long way ahead of me. Claire's second ride went to plan and she just edged ahead of me into silver medal position. I couldn't better my first ride and took the Bronze medal.

The men's event was very exciting to watch especially for team GB supporters with (for the first time ever) two Brits in the final. Sam Anderson had some solid rides with helixes both ways and a phonix monkey in one ride - he took 5th place. James 'Pringle' Bebbington had dominated the event so far and had taken first place in each round in the lead up to the finals. However, everyone increased their standard for the final. Peter Csonka had not been performing to his usual high level throughout the competition and was a victim of the 'flush'. However, his second ride in the final he scored move after move - McNasties left, right, phonics left, right, lunar orbit, back loop, huge air loop: 980 points. This was the highest scoring ride of the competition, so we waited, watched and cheered as Pringle stepped up his level to beat it - he got close with his huge Mcnasties and text book phonics monkeys, but it was not enough to beat Csonka's score. Pringle took silver medal with Mathieu Dumoulin in 3rd place.

Great Britain was the most successful nation with 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals (+3 unofficial squirt boat medals).

Semi finals

Posted By Tim Ward on Friday 18th June 2022 at 21:13:00

Junior ladies were up first in the semis and Rachel Bovill paddled well, but unfortunately didn't make it into the finals. She took 8th place in only her second year of freestyle competition. The junior men didn't quite find the same form that they had in the prelims, however, both Brendon Orton and James Benns made it into the finals in 3rd and 4th respectively. Rhys Roberts just missed out on the finals and took a credible 6th place in his first international competition.

Stu Parry once again nailed a huge air loop and a McNasty in the C1 event and took 2nd place into the finals. Adam Ramadam came 7th and Lee Pyke 9th.

In the ladies I am going into the final in 3rd place and Claire O'Hara 4th.

Sam Anderson took 5th place in the men's event with his solid helixes both ways. Mathieu Dumoulin (FRA) put in a really high scoring ride and looked to be getting huge bonuses on most of his moves. However, Pringle upped the standard even further and linked a number of moves in the last few seconds of his ride and took 1st place going into the final.

Men's quarters

Posted By Tim Ward on Friday 18th June 2022 at 10:41:48

James 'Pringle' Bebbington totally dominated the men's quarter finals this morning with a combined 2-ride score of 1290 points (and 700+ in one ride). He was getting McNasties, Phonics Monkeys, totally huge air loops and space godzillas. It is a very hard feature to set up in and to score moves (without flushing), but Pringle made it look easy as he set up for move after move without any time in between. Sam Anderson also did well in his rides and paddled consistently with space godzillas and helixes both ways, achieving 7th and a place in the semi final.

Europeans - Junior women and men's prelims

Posted By Tim Ward on Thursday 17th June 2022 at 19:00:36

First up today were the junior ladies. Gabby Bates unfortunately pulled out with a shoulder injury so could not complete her runs. However, Rachel Bovill, in her first international competition, had a really nice first ride with lots of spins and a good attempt at a loop, which took her into the semis in joint 8th place.

In the men's event Stu Parry also pulled out with an elbow injury with the aim of resting it for the C1 event. Sam Anderson was first up for team GB in the men's event. He had two consistent rides with helixes (which used to be called felixes) both ways and a massive space godzilla which put him into 4th place into the semis. Jon Best didn't achieve the rides that he had been getting in training sessions - he flushed several times on his first ride and although he got a couple of high scoring moves in the last 10 seconds of his 2nd ride he failed to make the semis.

Pringle was last up in the men's prelims and the pressure was on after several solid rides from both Mathieu Demoulin (Fra) and Peter Csonka (Slo). As had happened with numerous other paddlers he flushed twice early on in his first ride. He scored huge points in his 2nd ride with a huge loop, McNasties and a perfectly executed phonics monkey. He is through to the semis in first place.

The men's quarter-finals are on tomorrow (Friday) with 3 rides, 2 count, followed by all semi-finals (2 rides, 1 counts).

European Champs Prelims Day1

Posted By Tim Ward on Wednesday 16th June 2022 at 19:24:54

The opening ceremony took place last night in a spectacular castle setting. Thankfully the rain was light (unlike some of the downpours we have had over the last 3 days), the speeches were short and the food and drinks were free ensuring all enjoyed the event.

The competition started this morning with Paul King first up for the Brits in the OC1 event. Unfortunately it wasn't his day on the tricky feature and he didn't make it through to the final 5.

Junior men were up next. We have great talent across the junior men category and despite all of them being new to international competition they paddled extremely well. James Weight had only had 2 sessions to get used to the feature as he only arrived on Tuesday morning (straight after an exam on Monday) - although he didn't quite manage to plug into the sweet spot to pull off the huge air loops and space godzillas that we so often see him do in British events, he achieved a credible 12th place, only just missing out on the semi final.

After a slightly shaky start Rhys Roberts made sure that his second ride counted and he took 4th place and a ticket to the semis. Brendon Orton and James Benns both showed us some huge loops, McNasties and cartwheels. Brendon took the top spot with James just behind.

There were mixed fortunes in the ladies event as paddler after paddler flushed off with 0 points. Several big names got knocked out of the competition with unlucky rides including GB paddler, Nicola Beeby. Jenny Chrimes had a solid ride with vertical cartwheels in both rides but her loop didn't score meaning she just missed out on the semis in 11th place. I thought I'd keep everyone biting their nails (well, mainly myself) as I flushed off on two loop attempts in my first ride - another 0 points. My air loop and spin in my second ride was just enough to put me through to the semis in 7th place. Claire O'Hara scored a felix and a super-clean spin and took 2nd place.

In the C1 event Stu parry paddled well despite an injured elbow. He got a huge bonus on his air loops which helped him earn 2nd place. Adam Ramadan was 4th with two consistent rides and Lee Pyke took 5th.

Overall a very successful day for team Great Britain - semi-finals take place on Friday.

The junior ladies and men are up tomorrow.

European Champs training

Posted By Tim Ward on Monday 14th June 2022 at 16:05:55

The British team are currently in Lienz, Austria for the European Championships 2010. The first official team training session was today with team coaches Sam Ward and Ross Montandon working hard to offer feedback throughout the on-water session and via video following the session.

The feature looks friendly but is bouncy, unpredictable and really flushy at times. However all hole moves are possible and have been demonstrated by the GB team. The team are now refining their moves to ensure they will be performed precisely in order for them to be scored and are starting to link more moves together.

We have just one more official team-training slot before the prelims start on Wednesday.
